Yeojin Zoe Ryu is a graphic designer working across publications, editorial design, and moving images. She is particularly interested in exploring subjects in depth through research, reflection, and interpretation and translating her perspectives into narrative-driven visual works. Her practice is grounded in visual experimentation, often involving the creation of her own systems of visual language. She values the connections between images, such as their rhythms, contrasts, and sequences, and how these relationships shape layered, engaging narratives.

Mu

Mu is a publication project exploring the unique aesthetics and narrative of Korean shamanism. The title ‘Mu’ is a native Korean term that refers to Korean shamanism, and comes from honouring the distinct cultural and visual identity of Korean shamanistic practices. The book unfolds in five chapters: an introduction to Mu, spiritual illness, shamanic tools, protective spirits, and gut (ritual ceremony). Its format is based on the five-directional flag (obanggi), and this publication reflects the unique visual language of Korean shamanism, reinterpreted through a contemporary, editorial lens.

Shaman’s Dance

The Shaman’s Dance is an extension of the Mu publication project, focusing on the movements performed by Korean shamans during rituals. Inspired by the unique flow of the fabric used in shamanic costumes and ritual tools, this project abstracts the rhythm and energy of three distinct movements into a new visual language, utilising hand-drawn frames and fabric textures.

This project is about reinterpreting and representing data in a new visual form. The data visualisation was created by randomly selecting 108 trees from the given data of the London plane tree provided by Camden Council. The tree ring shapes used in the data visualisation represent the fact that even though the trees are of the same species, they all contain different information, such as size, condition, and location.
